The “Terrific” Twos: How We Channel Toddler Energy into Learning

The Terrific Twos: How We Channel Toddler Energy into Learning

The toddler years are a whirlwind of “I can do it myself!” and constant motion. At the Early Childhood School of Georgetown, we don’t just “manage” toddler energy—we celebrate it.

Between the ages of 18 months and 3 years, a child’s brain is making trillions of new connections. They are transitioning from babies to independent little people, and they need a space that lets them test their limits safely.

Here is how our toddler program turns everyday moments into major milestones.

1. Fostering The Power of Choice

Toddlers are famous for wanting control. We lean into this by offering a “choice-based” environment. Whether it is choosing which book to read or which color of smock to wear for art, giving toddlers small wins builds the confidence they need for bigger challenges later.

2. Social Learning (Beyond Sharing)

At this age, children are moving from “parallel play” (playing near each other) to actual interaction. Our teachers are experts at coaching toddlers through these first friendships, helping them find the words to express their feelings and navigate the world of taking turns.

3. Language Explosions

You might notice your toddler coming home with new words every day! We surround our toddlers with a language-rich environment. Through songs, storytelling, and constant conversation, we help them move from gestures to full sentences.

4. Active Bodies, Active Minds

Toddlers learn with their whole bodies. Our classrooms and outdoor spaces in Georgetown are set up for climbing, jumping, and exploring. This physical play isn’t just “recess”—it is how they develop the coordination and spatial awareness they need for healthy growth.

A Space Built Just for Them

Our toddler rooms are designed at their eye level, with materials they can reach and explore on their own. By treating the “terrific twos” with patience and purpose, we help our toddlers build a foundation of independence that lasts a lifetime.
