Sun, Sand, and Safety: Our Approach to Outdoor Play
As the Georgetown weather finally warms up, our students are spending more and more time in our outdoor play spaces. While it looks like pure fun (and it is!), outdoor play is a critical part of our curriculum. Whether they are exploring new scents, digging in the sandbox, or racing on trikes, our little explorers are developing gross motor skills, practicing social negotiation, and building physical confidence.
To make sure everyone stays safe and comfortable while they learn under the sun, here is a quick guide to how we handle the outdoor season at ECSG.
1. Sun Protection is a Team Effort
We want our students to enjoy the fresh air without the worry of sunburn.
- The Morning Routine: We ask that parents apply a base layer of sunscreen at home before drop-off.
- School Re-Application: Our teachers will re-apply sunscreen before we head out for afternoon play. Please ensure your child has a labeled bottle of their preferred sunscreen kept in their cubby!
2. The Importance of “Play-Ready” Footwear
While summer sandals and flip-flops are cute, they can be tricky for navigating woodchips and climbing structures. For safety and to prevent trips and falls, we highly recommend closed-toe shoes with a back strap (like sneakers). This allows your child to run, jump, and climb with total confidence.
3. Hydration Stations
Active play is thirsty work! We keep water easily accessible at all times during outdoor sessions. If your child has a favorite reusable water bottle, please make sure it is labeled with their name so they can keep it handy while they play.
4. Learning Through Nature
Our outdoor time isn’t just about “burning off energy.” Our teachers often bring the classroom outside! From counting “treasures” found in the grass to observing the local birds and squirrels, we use our outdoor space to reinforce the concepts of STEM and creative problem-solving in a hands-on way.
5. Dressing for the Mess
As any ECSG parent knows, a good day of learning often involves a little bit of dirt, sand, or water! We encourage you to dress your child in “play clothes” that are okay to get a little messy. It’s a sign of a very successful day of exploration.
We can’t wait to see all the growth and discovery that this sunny season will bring to our playground. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our explorers safe, hydrated, and ready for every outdoor adventure!
